May 27, 2010I don’t remember precisely the first DBT song I ever heard, but this is the first one I actually paid attention to, because the story behind it amused the hell out of me. DBT plays this song live a lot, and so pretty much all of their fans are acquainted with the trials and triumphs of Jan and Chester. And now Chester has passed. Rest in peace, man.
It’s so upsetting, because iconic underdogs are never supposed to die. A story like that has just gotta LIVE. There’s just no other way around it. They got married in Dollywood! DOLLYWOOD!!
BY A PORTER WAGGONER LOOKALIKE, even! If you haven’t listened to the version that Patterson referred to, with the lengthier story of Chester’s illness and recovery, you should. That’s what you expect – a valiant rally when it seems like all is lost. Chester was far too larger-than-life to ever actually *die*. It’s just heart-breaking.
